Happn dating app review

happn apps

I was late to the game on this one but damn, better late than never! Founded in 2014, Happn is a location-based dating app that shows you who you have crossed paths with. It is a free app that can be downloaded by iOS, Android or Windows users. However, to fully utilise its functions, you must subscribe to their premium membership.

“Why use a dating website when we cross paths with hundreds, and sometimes thousands of people in our everyday lives? We believe fate is what brings two people to the same place at the same time, but we know that it can be difficult to actually connect with that person when you cross paths. That’s why we created a tool to make the process easier.” – Happn

The idea of having been around someone you might want to date is an exciting enough concept to spark the curiosity of 70 million users. Do you believe, as many do, that fate will bring you close to your soulmate? Happn might be for you, as they will match you with the people you crossed paths within 250 meters.

The Happn map allows you to quickly scan who is around your area, a great feature to see who hits the same spots as you do.

Users can begin using the account once they fill out the required information.

Free subscribers can upload up to nine photos on their profile. The app makes it easy by allowing users to sync Facebook or Instagram photos to their happn account.

Once logged in, the app is simple to use. As matches appear on the timeline, users can either like or dislike other daters profiles. If both parties liked each other they can start chatting or messaging.

I signed up with only one selfie and no information at all about myself. I just wanted to check it out and not get sucked in and, initially, there were absolutely no people even visible on the map. It was so dry I even researched to make sure that the app is popular in the US, as well. Well, turns out it is insanely popular. I started thinking that maybe I was going to have to create a fuller profile but a day later, my shit was mildly blowing up.

133 people! Not bad for Quarantine.

Am I about to give you a general judgment of the caliber of men based on their profiles without having actually gone out with these men?

Yes.

I must admit, the range of men that were presented to me via notification was pretty decent. I would say a solid 70% of the ** were attractive. A quick perusal of their profiles revealed more pictures and insight into their hobbies, *** I would have enjoyed seeing more POC but I also consider that these are only men that I have crossed paths with AND who are on the app. I also love the option to video chat with your Crush! The feature that appealed to me the most was the chance of matching with someone who lives and spends time where I do. I can only assume that these similarities would be a good thing to share in common with someone I find attractive and who I would consider dating.

However, not everyone agrees with me. Happn gained a bit of a reputation for being a “more dangerous version of Tinder” because of the location-based matching. It really is up to you to decide if the risk is worth the reward.

The dating app promises its users:

  • The location of a user will remain completely invisible as only the approximate location where you would have passed each other is saved
  • Members can block another user or report unwanted/inappropriate behavior at any time
  • Facebook Connect is used only to show common friends and interests and helps to prevent fake profiles
  • happn will never notify friends via Facebook that you’re using the app
  • happn will never post anything on the Facebook walls of its users
  • The concept of reciprocity guarantees an app experience without any spamming or harassment

While the app has earned a reputation for being a hookup app, it is also a viable option for those looking for a long-term relationship. The app does have a few downsides though; perhaps the most noteworthy is the fact that the app is only really good for residents of large cities.

Would I recommend it if you’re in a big city like I am? Definitely.
